Spring 2011 Music in the Schools Program

This spring, CTMS is offering 2 branches of the program—The American Roots Workshop Series and The World Traditions Workshop Series. Both series consist of individual 60-minute interactive workshops for school children grades 2-5. These workshops are designed to enhance subject material covered as part of the California State Standards in areas of Language Arts, Health, History and Visual, Performing Arts among others.

American Roots Series
The American Roots Series was created by the staff at the California Traditional Music Society to bring to life the art, music and cultures brought by Anglo settlers. We have teamed with Los Angeles based artists to create workshops that discuss the importance of the various periods of immigration in the United States, how different cultures have assimilated and the ways in which their art has been woven into American History as well as “Pop Culture.”

World Traditions Series
The World Traditions Series was designed to represent the vast variety of cultures brought by world settlers to Southern California. This series focuses on the diversity found within Los Angeles and brings students together with musicians from Southern Italy, Spain and Nigeria as well as local artists who represent second and third generation immigrants. These artists will show how art, music and culture have transcended their bloodlines and hope to create an interest and appreciation for furthering the dissemination of traditional arts.
