Since 1981 the California Traditional Music Society as held its major traditional music festival each year on a date near the summer solstice. A “solstice” is either of two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. The summer solstice occurs when the sun is over the tropic of Cancer. To us in the Northern Hemisphere the day of the summer solstice contains the longest period of daylight, and the sun reaches the highest point in the sky at noon. Thus “solstice” has become a synonym for “the highest point”. For those of us on the CTMS Board of Directors as for many others the Summer Solstice Festival is the high point of the year. It was with great reluctance therefore that the Board decided that we had to postpone the next Summer Solstice Festival until 2010.

Although the 2007 festival was considered an artistic success and was well received by those who attended, the festival lost a significant amount of money, and the Board concluded after meeting with members of the CTMS community that changes had to be made to the festival and that postponing the Festival will give us time to make those changes.

The root of the term “solstice” is from the Latin: solstitium, meaning “Sun stands still”, and while might appear that CTMS is standing still, this is farthest from the truth! The Board has been holding many brainstorming sessions over the past several months to create a system to help us improve on our already spectacular festival. As part of this process we have listened to you and have read your suggestions and hope that you will continue to be our partner. In the next weeks we will be setting up new high level planning committees and will need volunteers. If you want to help please give us a call at 818-817-7756, or an email to info@ctmsfolkmusic.org or fill out the form below. Also, we may be calling about some of you to share your thought with us via several surveys, and your input will be vitally important to us.

If you would like to be involved with the planning for for the next festival sign up for our "staff and volunteer" email newsletter by filling out the form below.

The next Summer Solstice Festival will be upon us in the blink of an eye. All of us at CTMS hope you will continue to be our partners in this fine family festival in June 2010.

Look for updates here as they become available.
